Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
